Here at Hammerstead, we raise and sell free range chickens. These are not a special breed apart genetically, but they are certainly different from the chicken you get in the supermarket! Those are raised in conditions that would curl your hair - "factory farm" is really an understatement.
These birds roam free, eating the foods chickens are supposed to eat: seedheads from plants and bugs. We don't have an insect problem here at Hammerstead! Not with these gals on patrol!
All of our animals are raised and finished
on pasture - no feedlots, preventative antibiotics or other obnoxious
factory farming practices here: we believe in treating our animals
right and allowing them to live and grow naturally. Not only
does this reflect an understanding of the relationship between
man and his livestock, it's also much more enviromentally friendly
and produces better tasting and healthier meat and eggs.
A fresh, frozen chicken is $2.50 per pound, and generally weighs between 3 and 5 pounds.
These are only available periodically, so please drop us a note or give us a call before you come and get'em!
The price includes UDSA processing - you can pick'em up or have'em delivered locally (in quantities of 25 or more), same price!
The eggs our hens produce are simply the best.
Thick shells, deep orange yolks and no "eggy" flavor mark the quality.
And they're only $2.50 a dozen, right from the back porch.
