Hammerstead Farms is dedicated to the proposition that farming and husbandry should be natural, organic processes - the land should be respected and used, not exploited. Animals should be treated with respect and dignity, no matter what their intended fate. Happy, healthy animals produce more and better quality products: it just amazes and outrages us that so many of our fellow farmers seem to have forgotten this basic principle.

All of our livestock is free range: and this means more than just having an open door to a small feedlot. Everything wanders the same pastures, from chickens to sheep to horses and cattle. We practice rotational grazing to keep our land and animals healthy and growing, and we concentrate on breeds of livestock that do well on grass and pasture. We don't feed mass quantities of grain or special feeds, we don't use growth hormones or feed anitbiotics. All of our products are as natural and healthy as we can make them: a fried chicken from our farm does indeed taste like Grandma used to make, because it's raised the same way Grandma used to raise them!

It's a simple principle, really, and one we've found most successful. We maintain a links page to other sites and organizations that feel the same way we do about these matters. You can find a bit of our history here.

We concentrate on mail order sales of fleece and fiber products from our flock of Scottish Blackface, Horned Dorst and Texile sheep, but sell eggs, horn, bone and other products as well. We also have a petting zoo available locally for birthdays, picnics and other company or personal events. We've never appeared at a wedding or a funeral, but there's a first time for everything!

You can pay using cash, check or money order and we can accept electronic transfers and major credit cards via PayPal (click here to make a payment on your account). Your order is sent to us via electronic mail, and we will hold you order for up to a week until payment can arrive.
