Hammerstead Happenings - October 2005

Greetings from Hammerstead Farms!

What a busy September we had! It hardly seems like it's October, especially as the temperature (as I write this on the afternoon of the 5th) is well into the 80's! More like August ... but change is coming. Most of my neighbors are harvesting their corn and soybeans - lot's of tractor traffic on State Road 32 of late.

New Delivery Areas

We have begun delivering to the greater Lafayette area, as well as to Hamilton county (including Noblesville and Carmel). We'll also try to take care of as many customers on the far east side of Indy as possible, as far south as Irvington.

We go to Tippecanoe and Clinton counties on Monday, and to northeastern Indy on Thursday. If you've been interested in delivery, and are in one of these areas (or our original delivery area of Boone and NW Marion counties), by all means give us a call or drop us a note!

New Yogurts From Trader's Point Creamery

Trader's Point has "retired" their raspberry yogurt in favor of two new flavors: Orange and Low Fat Strawberry. They're still making raspberry, though: it seems as though the supplier for organic blueberries that they use in their Wild Berry Yogurt is having trouble getting the berries to the creamery, and until blueberries are available the creamery has stopped making Wild Berry is instead making Raspberry. Clear as mud?

Bottom line: you can get Raspberry, Orange, Lowfat Strawberry, Banana Mango and Plain yogurts right now. If you've never tried one of their yogurts it's something that has to be tasted to be believed: think fruit smoothie, only better.

Egg Supply

Our egg supply has stabilized - we are now producing better than 60 dozen per week, and have access to more good eggs than ever before. So no more potential limits on orders! That supply problem is solved!

With the advent of somewhat cooler temperatures, production has picked up, and we'll have another hundred hens laying eggs by December.

Building the Business

We've actually turned a small profit from our delivery business in recent months - tiny, but noticeable. And I can't thank all of my customers enough for making it with us this far, but ...

We need to grow in order to keep this alive, especially with gas prices showing no sign of letting up. Given the physical layout of my routes, the economy is built in when there are more stops. So ... .

Seeing as how we now have a few extra eggs, I'd like to offer a free dozen to any existing customer who tells a friend about us, when that friend places an order (for more than a dozen eggs). Just have your friend mention your name when they get a hold of us to order, and we'll see to it that you get either a free dozen eggs or a $2 credit, your choice.

Thanks again for your interest in (and patronage of) Hammerstead - we're really excited about our farm, and hope to continue serving you in the future.

Be well,

Dave Haxton
